Anton Chekhov was born in the city of Taganrog, in Russia’s deep south, on 17 January 1860. His family lived in poverty, and his father was a strict disciplinarian. The children were made to get out of bed at five o’clock in the morning and were expected to work in the family shop before going to school. Anton, however, was soon to start making his own money: he created stories that were printed in the local newspaper and was thus able to support his family. Later in life, he attended to people in his capacity as a doctor, became a world-famous writer and travelled the world. He died in 1940 in Badenweiler, Germany.
