English Title: Self's Murder

Selb’s girlfriend Brigitte thinks it is about time he realises that he is getting older. That she feels the seventy-year-old loner is still far too restless and independent. His friends all are going into retirement. It is hardly worthwhile keeping on the office for the few jobs that still come in - even Selb realises this. But one snowy February night he helps pull a Mercedes out of the ditch, and all at once he is saddled with a strange job. A job which really cannot interest the customer, the heir to an old-established Schwetzinger private bank and recently also owner of a bank in Cottbus. A job that does not really interest Selb either, but in which he becomes more and more deeply entangled. The trail of money leads him from the west to the east, from one defeat of eastern Germany after the collapse of communism to another, and finally to the question of whether he hasn’t taken on too much in his old age. An exciting crime novel from the recent German-German past. And food for thought about growing older.

»A well-rounded treat.«New Statesman

»A witty, sophisticated series of detective novels featuring the supremely likeable private investigator Gerhard Self.«Observer

»Satisfying, compelling reading.«Sunday Telegraph

»This compelling tale ... offers a sharp critique of German postwar society, and its refusal to confront its war time past. The seriousness of this underlying message does not detract from the novel's more entertaining qualities however.«The Times

»A gutsy German detective thriller ... This is an atmospheric, tautly plotted narrative with a satisfying complex protagonist.«Herald

»Gerhard Self is a find.«Spectator

»Crisp prose and some well-handled plot complications will keep readers turning the pages.«Publishers Weekly

»›Self’s Murder‹ is an engrossing, provocative novel, and the series deserves to be reckoned among those remarkable post-war European novels that infused the detective fiction genre with serious philosophical purpose.«Los Angeles Times

»Schlink is the heir of the best North American crime writers. He has written a roman noir in the tradition of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, where logical analysis merges with a corrupt society which private detective Selb - a sort of Marlowe with a German accent - is trying to comprehend by looking into the past.«La Razon
