Until the Sun Shines

Published by Diogenes as Bis die Sonne scheint
Original Title: Bis die Sonne scheint

It’s 1983. Daniel is about to have his Confirmation, and is dreaming of a blue velvet jacket and grey flannel trousers – but then he overhears his parents talking, and it dawns on him that he won’t be getting them. The Hormanns are broke, and have no idea how to make ends meet for their family of six. As imaginative as the parents are, money management isnʼt their strong point. What they are great at, though, is keeping up appearances, even when the bailiff is outside the door.

»Christian Schünemann presents a marvellously eccentric and fast-paced book that does offer a hint of drama, but lots of amusement, too.«

Stefanie Neuhausen / WDR, Cologne

»A multi-faceted family novel in which you get really close to the protagonists.«

Katrin Krämer / NDR, Hamburg

»The waiting was worth it. Until the Sun Shines is an enchanting family novel, a wise book about the aftermath of war and dictatorship far into the third generation, and a story about the everyday life in the 80s which, if we look at it today, seems to be from a different world.«

Sabine Zaplin / Bayerischer Rundfunk, Munich

»An outstandingly relaxed and humorous, vivid and authentic story about the attitude towards life, friendship and self-discovery.«

Norbert Striemann / Radio Mülheim, Cologne

»Well balanced between laconic wit and quiet melancholy.«

Silvi Feist / Emotion, Hamburg

»Christian Schünemann tells the story of his upbringing and his charmingly chaotic family in an entertaining and thought-provoking German novel.«

Presse am Sonntag, Vienna

»The entertaining novel unfolds into a societal panorama.«

Martina Sulner / RND, Hanover

»Christian Schünemann accomodates a lot in this equally reflexive and diverting German novel.«

Doris Kraus / Die Presse, Vienna
